Descendants of Peter Hiltzinger
Generation No. 1
1. PETER1 HILTZINGER was born August 26, 1681 in Germany. He married MARGARET NEBER June 17, 1721. According to Clement Hilsinger, Peter came to America from Germany in 1711. His date and place of death is unknown.
Children of PETER HILTZINGER and MARGARET NEBER are:
| i. | JACOB2 HILZINGER. | ||
| 2. | ii. | MICHAEL HILSINGER, b. 1724, New York. | |
| iii. | MARY HILZINGER. | ||
| iv. |
ELIZABETH HILZINGER. |
||
| v. | SUE ANN HILZINGER. | ||
| vi. | ANN HILZINGER. |
Generation No. 2
2. MICHAEL2 HILSINGER (PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born 1724 in New York. He married (1) MARIA MARGARETHA KRAUSELER November 07, 1752 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She died between 1753 and 1754. He married (2) AGNES SULTZEN June 30, 1754 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Schoharie, NY. Clement Hilsinger wrote that Agnes died in 1845 and was buried in the Brumley Cemetery.
Child of MICHAEL HILSINGER and MARIA KRAUSELER is:
| i. | CHRISTINA3 HILSINGER, b. March 23, 1753, New York; m. CONRAD NORDERMAN, July 25, 1797, St. Paul's Lutheran Church. |
Children of MICHAEL HILSINGER and AGNES SULTZEN are:
| 3. | ii. | PETER3 HILSINGER, b. March 20, 1755, New York; d. before April 23, 1822. | |
| iii. | JACOB HILSINGER, b. October 28, 1756, New York; d. 1836; m. MARGARET HAUS, January 02, 1787, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Schoharie, NY. A will for a Jacob Hilsinger of Carlisle, dated May 12, 1835, was probated on April 16, 1838 (presumably it is for this Jacob Hilsinger). It mentions a brother, Peter, deceased, and nephews Peter, Jacob, and Frederick, all sons of his deceased brother, Peter. Executors were Peter, Jacob, and Frederick. Witnesses were Henry I. Moak of Carlisle and Abraham C. (rest illegible). | ||
| iv. | CATHERINE HILSINGER, b. November 21, 1758, New York; d. 1830; m. CORNELIUS ACKERT, January 16, 1781, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Schoharie, NY. | ||
| v. | ROSINA HILSINGER, b. July 10, 1760, New York; m. JOHANNES ENGLE, June 20, 1784, St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Schoharie, NY. | ||
| 4. | vi. | JOHANNES HILSINGER, b. July 23, 1762, New York. | |
| 5. | vii. | MICHAEL HILSINGER, JR., b. January 09, 1765. | |
| viii. | ELIAS HILSINGER, b. July 26, 1767, New York; d. July 14, 1851; m. MARIA WHITMAN. Elisha Hilsinger appears on the 1800 U.S. Census in Cobleskill, Schoharie County, New York, next to Barent Hilsinger. Enumerated under Elisha are 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female 26-45. Elias Hilsinger appears on the 1810 U.S. Census in Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York, still next to Barna. Hilsinger. A footnote in a transcript of the 1810 Census cross references this entry to the 1800 entry for Elisha. Enumerated under Elias in 1810 are 1 male 10-16, 1 male 45+, 6 females under 10, and 1 female 26-45. Elias Hilsinger appears on the 1820 U.S. Census in Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York, but Barnabas has died between 1810 and 1820. Enumerated under Elias in 1820 are 2 males under 10, 1 male 18-26, 1 male 45+, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 4 females 16-26, and 1 female 45+. | ||
| 6. | ix. | BARENT (BARNABUS) HILSINGER, b. October 11, 1769, Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York; d. March 21, 1813, Schoharie County, New York. | |

Generation No. 3
3. PETER3 HILSINGER (MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born March 20, 1755 in New York, and died before April 23, 1822. He married ELIZABETH FINCK March 27, 1785 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Schoharie, NY.
A will for Peter Hilsinger of Carlisle, New York, dated April 1, 1819, was probated on April 23, 1822. It mentions his sons Peter, Jacob, and Frederick, a brother Jacob and his wife, Elizabeth (I'm unclear if this reference is to Jacob's wife or Peter's wife), and daughters Margaret and Catharina. Executors were David Shafer, Josiah Van Schaick, and Jacob Brown. Witnesses were Joseph Van Schaick, William Rees, I.M. Brown.
A Peter Hilsinger, 45+ years of age, appears on the 1820 U.S. Census for Schoharie County; enumerated with him are 1 male 18-26, 2 males 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 16-26, 2 females 26-45, and 1 female 45+.
William E. Roscoe's 1882 History of Schoharie County, New York, 1713-1882 reports (page 305) that
"Immediately after the Revolution, Jacob and Peter Hillsinger settled at Little York, upon the farms now occupied by Adam and William. During the war, Jacob and Peter were employed as scouts, and spent much of their time in Old Dorlack, watching the movements of the Tories ... These brothers lived upon their possessions to good old ages, and were highly esteemed."
Given the time period, I assume that this refers to Jacob and Peter, sons of Michael Hilsinger.
Children of PETER HILSINGER and ELIZABETH FINCK are:
| i. | MARIA4 HILSINGER, b. February 15, 17861. | ||
| 8. | ii. | PETER HILSINGER, b. August 03, 1790; d. June 22, 1863. | |
| iii. | JACOB HILSINGER, b. April 03, 17932. | ||
| iv. | MARGARET HILSINGER, b. July 15, 17962. Baptism: August 21, 1796, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cobleskill, NY | ||
| v. | FREDERICK HILSINGER, b. September 03, 17992. The book Schoharie County, NY Deaths and Burials (1921 by Luckhurst) reports that Charity Hilsinger, "wife of Frederick", died February 29, 1863 at age 58 (page 80). Charity is possibly connected to this Frederick. | ||
| vi. | CATHARINA HILSINGER, b. July 10, 18022. |
4. JOHANNES3 HILSINGER (MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born July 23, 1762 in New York. He married ENGEL/CATHERINE HITCHMAN.
Clemant Hilsinger reports that Johannes Hilsinger was married to "Catherine Hitchman", however I can only find references to Johannes being married to "Engel". No marriage record was found in the St. Paul's Lutheran Church records.
Children of JOHANNES HILSINGER and ENGEL/CATHERINE HITCHMAN are:
| i. | JOHN4 HILSINGER, b. July 23, 1785. | ||
| 9. | ii. | DAVID HILSINGER, b. August 16, 1797. | |
| iii. | CATHARINA HILSINGER, b. March 12, 1800. |
5. MICHAEL3 HILSINGER, JR. (MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born January 09, 1765. He married ALIDA MERRIL March 03, 1789 in Schoharie Reformed Church, Schoharie, NY, daughter of JONATHAN MORL and DEBORAH VAN DEUSEN. Her name is also sometimes spelled "Alletta"; likewise, her last name is sometimes "Merril" and sometimes "Morl".
Children of MICHAEL HILSINGER and ALIDA MERRIL are:
| i. |
JOHANNES4 HILSINGER, b. October 09, 1790. |
||
| ii. | LAMBERT HILSINGER, b. July 26, 1798. |
6. BARENT (BARNABUS3) HILSINGER (MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born October 11, 1769 in Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York, and died March 21, 1813 in Schoharie County, New York. He married CATHERINE CONRAD about 1800 in prob. Schoharie County, New York, daughter of EKER CONRAD and ELIZABETH. She was born 1772 in Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York, and died March 21, 1848 in LaPeer, New York.
On the 1800 U.S. Census, Barent Hilsinger is a resident of Cobleskill, Schoharie County, New York, living next to his brother, Elias. Enumerated under this name are 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-16, 1 male 26-45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female 26-45. This conflicts with the birthdates of Barent's children and his assumed marriage date. The only explanation could be that he and his wife took in someone else's children.
On the 1810 U.S. Census, Barna Hilsinger is a resident of Carlisle, Schoharie County (I think the township names changed between 1800 and 1810), still next to his brother, Elias. In 1810, the Barnabus Hilsinger household includes 2 males under 10, 1 male 26-45, 1 male 45+, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female 26-45 (the earlier children from the 1800 entry are no longer present). A transcript of the 1810 Census includes a cross reference note, linking Barna. Hilsinger with Barent in the 1800 Census!
Neither Barent nor Barnabus Hilsinger appears in the 1820 Census for Schoharie County. According to Clement Hilsinger, after the death of Barent/Bernhard/Barnabas Hilsinger, his wife and children moved to Cortland County; their reason for making this move is unknown. Barnabas Hilsinger is buried in the Brumley Cemetery.
Children of BARENT/BARNABUS HILSINGER and CATHERINE CONRAD are:
| 10. | i. | CONRAD4 HILSINGER, b. January 25, 1801, probably Carlisle, Schoharie County, NY; d. March 09, 1882, probably Marathon, New York. | |
| 11. | ii. | BARNABUS HILSINGER, JR., b. 1806, Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York; d. 1868, Marathon, Cortland County, NY. | |
| 12. | iii. | MARGARET HILSINGER, b. June 28, 1808, Sharon, Schoharie County, New York; d. March 10, 1859, Marathon, Cortland County, New York. | |
| 13. | iv. | PETER HILSINGER, b. about 1812, Schoharie County, New York. | |
| 14. | v. | WILLIAM HILSINGER, b. September 24, 1813, Schoharie County, New York; d. March 28, 1856, Cortland County, New York. |
7. ABRAHAM3 HILSINGER (MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born August 04, 1772 in New York, and died March 20, 1850. He married EVA LOUCKS.
Children of ABRAHAM HILSINGER and EVA LOUCKS are:
| i. | MARIA4 HILSINGER, b. April 27, 1800. | ||
| ii. | DANIEL HILSINGER, b. November 20, 1803. | ||
| iii. | ISACE HILSINGER, b. September 04, 1808. | ||
| iv. | EVE HILSINGER, b. December 25, 1810. | ||
| v. | SOLOMON HILSINGER, b. December 25, 1810. | ||
| vi. | ELIZABETH HILSINGER, b. June 13, 1813. |
Generation No. 4
8. PETER4 HILSINGER (PETER3, MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born August 03, 17902, and died June 22, 1863 (age at death 72 years, 10 months, 14 days). He married MARGARET KILTZ December 03, 18113. She was born October 18, 17873, and died August 11, 1858 (age at death 70 years, 9 months, 24 days).
Children of PETER HILSINGER and MARGARET KILTZ are:
| i. | SUSANAH5 HILSINGER, b. March 08, 1813; d. August 03, 1880 (age at death 67 years, 4 months, 25 days). | ||
| ii. | ELIZABETH HILSINGER, b. May 26, 1818; d. May 13, 1863 (age at death 44 years, 11 months, 13 days). | ||

| v. | CATHARINE HILSINGER, b. February 16, 1828; d. July 04, 1911. |
9. DAVID4 HILSINGER (JOHANNES3, MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born August 16, 1797. He married SARAH. Children of DAVID HILSINGER and SARAH are:
| 16. | i. | ISAAC5 HILSINGER, b. about 1828. | |
| ii. | DAVID HILSINGER, b. 1831. | ||
| 17. | iii. | WILLIAM HIRAM HILSINGER, b. 1838. | |
| iv. | MARGARET HILSINGER, b. 1841. |
10. CONRAD4 HILSINGER (BARENT/BARNABUS3, MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born January 25, 1801 in probably Carlisle, Schoharie County, NY, and died March 09, 1882 in probably Marathon, New York. He married EVE/PEGGY. She was born about 1802, and died March 30, 1866 in probably Marathon, New York.
The following obituary appeared in the March 15, 1882 issue of The Marathon Independent newspaper: "Conrad Hilsinger, father of David Hilsinger of this village, died last Friday at the advanced age of 82 years. Funeral services were held at the M. E. church on Sunday, Rev. E. C. Cowles of Lapeer, officiating."
Children of CONRAD HILSINGER and EVE/PEGGY are:
| 18. | i. | DAVID5 HILSINGER, b. September 1821, New York; d. February 16, 1905, Marathon, New York. | |
| 19. | ii. | CHAUNCEY HILSINGER, b. March 25, 1826; d. October 30, 1873, probably Marathon, New York. |
1. BARNABUS4 HILSINGER, JR. (BARENT/BARNABUS3, MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born 1806 in Carlisle, Schoharie County, New York, and died 1868 in Marathon, Cortland County, NY (buried in Marathon Village Cemetery). He married MARY COONROD 1825 in perhaps McGraw, Cortland Co., NY, daughter of WILLIAM COONRODT and MARY. She was born 1808 in Cortland County, New York, and died 1867 in Marathon, Cortland County, NY.
On the 1850 Census, Wm. Coonrod is listed as a member of the Barnabus and Polly Hilsinger family (M432, Roll 493, Marathon, Cortland Co., NY). In the same area are David Coonrod (age 35) and Wm. Coonrod (age 32). This is an unusual name, so these two men are likely brothers of Mary (Polly) Hilsinger. By 1860, Wm. Coonrod is no longer listed as part of the household; most likely he died between 1850 and 1860. There are probably other children than those listed here; all but William were obtained from the 1850 and 1860 Census.
Children of BARNABUS HILSINGER and MARY COONROD are:
| 20. | i. | WILLIAM5 HILSINGER, b. 1826, Marathon, New York; d. March 28, 1891, Marathon, NY. | |
| 21. | ii. | ROSETTA HILSINGER, b. 1828; d. 1906. | |
| 22. | iii. | CHESTER HILSINGER, b. 1830; d. March 02, 1896, Binghamton, New York. | |

| 31. | xii. | ADAM HILSINGER, b. October 1846, New York; d. 1911. | |
| 32. | xiii. | EVE HILSINGER, b. 1849. |
12. MARGARET4 HILSINGER (BARENT/BARNABUS3, MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born June 28, 1808 in Sharon, Schoharie County, New York4, and died March 10, 1859 in Marathon, Cortland County, New York4. She married AZARIAH PIERCE January 30, 1838 in Marathon, Cortland County, New York4. He was born April 17, 1811 in Virgil, Cortland County, New York4, and died March 28, 1857 in Lapeer, Cortland County, New York4.
There are two conflicting death dates for Margaret: February 27, 1860 in one source, and March 10, 1859 in World Family Tree Volume 13 (Pedigree # 1536). Margaret Hilsinger and Azariah Pierce are buried in the Parker Cemetery, near Marathon, New York.
Children of MARGARET HILSINGER and AZARIAH PIERCE are:
| i. | AMBROSE5 PIERCE, b. 1840, Lapeer; d. 1868. Buried Parker Cemetery, near Marathon, New York | ||
| 33. | ii. | RUTH AMELIA PIERCE, b. June 13, 1844, Lapeer, Cortland County, New York; d. October 04, 1920, Waterloo, Iowa. |
3. PETER4 HILSINGER (BARENT/BARNABUS3, MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born about 1812 in Schoharie County, New York. He married LYDIA. She was born 1823 in Cortland County, New York.
On the 1875 New York State Census, Peter Hilsigner, 63, born in Schoharie County, is enumerated with his wife and several children in the Town of Lisle, Broome County. His wife, Lydia, 52, was born in Cortland County, as were Putnam (23), Arthur (17), and Adin W. (13).
Children of PETER HILSINGER and LYDIA are:
| i. | SAMPSON5 HILSINGER, b. about 1843; d. April 18, 1850. The headstone is illegible; date of death could be Apr or Aug 18, 1850. Age at death = 7 years, 11 months, 27 days. | ||

| iv. | GEORGE HILSINGER, b. 1850; d. 1870. | ||
| v. | PUTMAN HILSINGER, b. April 22, 1852, Cortland County, New York5; d. July 10, 1925, Cortland, New York6. On the 1900 census, Putnam is enumerated with his brother Edwin and his family. Both Putnam and Edwin are described as General Mechanics. On the 1910 census, Putnam is listed as a boarder in the house of Harrison A. Neff (69), who lived next door to Edwin D. Hilsinger. Putnam is listed as 57 years old and single. | ||
| 35. | vi. |
WILLIAM HILSINGER, b. 1854; d. March 15, 1903, Marathon, New York. |
|

| ix. | LINDEN F. HILSINGER, b. 1845; d. 1925; m. ELIZABETH PARKER; b. 1840; d. 1913. Hilsinger family records identify this man as Lyndon, but his headstone identifies him as Linden. Both are buried in Parker Street Cemetery in Lapeer, New York. | ||
| 38. | x. | ARTHUR HILSINGER, b. about 1858, Cortland County, New York. | |
| 39. | xi. | ADIN HILSINGER, b. about 1862, Cortland County, New York. |
14. WILLIAM4 HILSINGER (BARENT/BARNABUS3, MICHAEL2, PETER1 HILTZINGER) was born September 24, 1813 in Schoharie County, New York, and died March 28, 1856 in Cortland County, New York. He married ARMINETTA. She was born 1826.
William Hilsinger's will provided:
"I William Hilsinger of the town of Marathon in the County of Cortland State of New York of the age of 4[second digit illegible] years and being of sound mind and memory do make publish and declare this my last will and testament in [illegible word] following that is to say:

"In witness wheteof I have hereunto set my hand and d seal this twenty seventh day of March in the year one thousand eight hundred and fifty-six." Signed William Hilsinger.
This will, created on March 27, 1856, was submitted for probate by William Church on April 7, 1856. It would appear that William Hilsinger had some knowledge that his death was approaching and had time to prepare his will and his financial affairs. William Hilsinger was 42 years, 7 months, 4 days of age at his death.
Children of WILLIAM HILSINGER and ARMINETTA are:
