Descendants of Johannes Rema

Generation No. 1

1. Johannes (John) Rema was born in the early 1730's in the Rheinland-Pfalz area of Germany. It is possible that the ancestors of Johannes Rema came from Switzerland. Researcher Stephen Rima of Massachusetts has found a reference of the Rima family in Switzerland in 1450 in a town called Mosgna. He believes this family relocated to Germany from Switzerland.

Johannes Rema arrived via Rotterdam to Philadelphia, PA in 1765 with his wife, Catherine (her maiden name is unknown) and at least 3 children aboard the ship Betsy under Capt. John Osman. Another of the Hasenclever recruits, they traveled about two months, and were accompanied by several neighboring families.

John Rema was naturalized on March 8th, 1773, along with several neighbors. He was a member of the Tryon County Militia. Serving with him were sons John, Jr., Jacob, and George. Son Peter was two young but told stories of how his father and older brothers would leave the fort to go and fight. When they returned for supplies, Peter and George would run the clothes and provisions out to them.

During the raid in May 1780, sons John, Frederick and Jacob were captured Aby Indian Tories@ and taken away to Montreal, Canada. They escaped (some records indicate after about two weeks, while others show them there from July to December) and made their way home. After that raid, the Rimas and many of their German neighbors removed to Caughnawaga/Fond, Montgomery County. After the war they returned to what was left of the farm in Schuyler, Herkimer County.

The book Early Families of Herkimer County, New York, confirms much of this information. It reports that "John Riema was listed in the German Flats militia in 1769, was naturalized 8 Mar 1773, and was later in Revolutionary Service. John Sr. lived first at the New Petersburg (now Schuyler NY) settlement of the Peter Hasenclaver immigrants of 1766, along with the Ayer/Oyer, Finster, Lentz, Valentine Miller, and Witrig families. Then later he apparently moved with several neighbors to the New Germantown settlement in the Reimensneider's Bush area northeast of Herkimer. The Hatch Papers say John Reima was captured and shot during the Tory Indian raid of 1780, and at the same time his sons John jr, Frederick, & Jacob were captured." (page 212).

The family name is found spelled in a variety of ways, including Rema, Riema, Reima, Rimah.

According to Early Families of Herkimer County, New York (page 213): "A story related in Arnold's Oyer book (page 14) says that during the Revolution, Tory Indians, having captured his young friends in a field while Peter hid in the woods, ordered the other children to call for him -- instead they yelled in German 'Peter, bleib wo du bist' (i.e., 'Peter, stay where you are'). Oyer gives a conflicting death date of February 13, 1844, which is perhaps just a typographical error.

According to Early Families of Herkimer County, New York, Catherine Hoffstader was also known as Maria Catherine Hoffstader. Also, the family name was spelled Hockstatter by some people. "Baptismal Records of German Flats Reformed Church" lists Maria Catharina, daughter of Christian Hochstatter and Maria Catharina, born January 3, 1776, baptized January 6, 1776, sponsored by Michael Wuterich and Amalia Catharina. Stephen Rima gives a conflicting birth date of December 29, 1775.

55. Lany3 Rema (Peter2, Johannes1) was born March 20, 1810 at Schuyler, New York. She died just four years later on August 1, 1814. Cause of death is unknown. She was probably buried in the old cemetery at Schuyler, which has since been lost.

56. Sophronia3 Rema (Peter2, Johannes1) was born May 28, 1812 at Schuyler, NY. She married James Widrig when she was 31 years old in 1844. She was the last daughter at home, apparently caring for her ill father. Sophronia and James Widrig removed to Oswego County with her two brothers after their father's death. They seem to have remained in that area all the rest of their lives. James and Sophronia Widrig were listed in Orwell, NY in 1850 and 1860. In 1860 their real estate holdings were about $4,000, quite substantial for those times. She died February 6, 1879 at the age of 66. Their burial location is unknown.

Child of Sophronia Rema and James Widrig is:

131 i. Sophronia C. Widrig, born 1845; she married Edwin Crandall.

57. Peter3 Rema, Jr. (Peter2, Johannes1) at Schuyler on May 28, 1814. He remained at home in Schuyler until after his father's death in 1844. His father was generous to him in his will. He married Lydia Farmer about 1835. He removed to St. Lawrence County, New York but did not remain there long. Where he lived from 1850-1879 is unknown. In 1870 his son, Hiram, was married at Nebraska City, Nebraska. Peter is listed with this son in 1880 at Otoe County.

Children of Peter Rema, Jr. and Lydia Farmer are:

132 i. Willard Rema, born 1836 at Schuyler, NY.
133 ii. Hiram P. Rema, born February 10, 1837 at Schuyler, NY; he married Josephine Mannon.

58. Philanda3 Rema (Peter2, Johannes1) was born June 15, 1816, at Schuyler, New York, and died January 5, 1902, in Cambria, Hillside County, Michigan. At the age of 17 she married Lyman Onderkirk on Christmas Day 1833. Lyman's father, Jacob John Oderkirk, who was born March 1, 1772, in Hoosick, and died 1853 in Boylston, married Catherine Wygant (she was born 1775 in Hoosick and died 1861 in Boylston). Jacob Oderkirk's father was Isaac Ouderkerk, born October 8, 1749 in Albany and died February 6, 1837 in Hoosick.

In 1850 Philanda was living at Ellisburgh, NY, not far from her brothers and sisters in Oswego County. After 1850 the Ouderkirks left that area and settled at Van Buren Township, Onondago County, New York. They remained there for 15 years. About 1870 they made one more move, this time to Hillsdale County, Michigan. They settled in a farming area called Cambria Township. It was here that Lyman died October 25, 1895 at the age of 81. Philanda died January 5, 1902 at the age of 85. They are buried in Old Cambria Cemetery.

Child of Philanda Rema and Lyman Onderkirk is:

137 i. Perry H.4 Onderkirk, born February 1836 in Herkimer, New York; died 1906 in Cambria, Hillside County, Michigan. He married Elnora A. Lyons.

59. Anna3 Rema (Peter2, Johannes1) was born at Schuyler, NY on July 25, 1820. She lived with her parents until her death on September 26, 1842 at the age of 22. Her cause of death is unknown, but she was listed as a sickly child. She never married.

Generation No. 4

100. Delaney4 Rema (Frederick3, Peter2, Johannes1) was born June 12, 1821 near Schuyler, New York. She married Peter Weaver, Jr., a man from Frankfort, on September 14, 1843 at Waterloo, New York by Rev. Tillman Chase. Peter was the son of Peter Weaver and Charity Sitts.

Delaney and Peter lived at Frankfort in 1850 and later made the move to Seneca Falls where Delaney's father lived (they probably moved about 1870). Peter sold his farm at a considerable profit. Sometime in 1876 he bought a farm in Waterloo Township and a home on Center Street in Waterloo village.

The 1900 Census shows Peter and Delaney Weaver as having been married for 57 years. He died soon after on March 11, 1901 at the age of 81. She returned to Frankfort to live with her son, Simon, in her old age. She died July 7, 1910 at the age of 89. Both are buried in Seneca Falls.

Children of Delaney Rema and Peter Weaver are:

101. Mary L.4 Rema (Frederick3, Peter2, Johannes1) was born about December 13, 1826 at Schuyler, New York. She married Solomon Bridenbecker, a son of Jacob Bridenbecker of East Schuyler and they made their home near Seneca Falls, New York. The 1850 Census for Frankfort lists Mary Bridenbecker with her sister's family, the Peter Weaver's. It is possible that she was visiting her sister from the western part of the state, or possibly that they were separated. In 1855 Peter Weaver received legal documents for Mary Bridenbecker, which indicates that she was still not living with Mr. Bridenbecker.

Solomon Bridenbecker was a teamster who traveled quite a bit. After Mary died on October 24, 1875, Solomon remarried, this time to Mrs. Susan Harris, a widow with one child. They had three more children together, Frankie, Anna, and Frederick. Solomon died October 14, 1895 at age 66 and Susan died November 22, 1905 (they are buried in the Restvale Cemetery on the edge of town).

Children of Mary Rema and Solomon Bridenbecker:
