Either before leaving England, or during the tedious midwinter voyage, he seems to have formed a strong attachment for the talented young non-conformist minister, Roger Williams, who was a fellow passenger." 5. WILLIAM5 SACKETT
(JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born April 20, 1662 in Northampton, Westfield County, Massachusetts, and died March 28, 1700 in Deerfield, Massachusetts. He married HANNAH GRAVES November 27, 1689 in Hampden, Westfield County, Massachusetts, daughter of ISAAC GRAVES and HANNAH CHURCH. She was born January 24, 1665/66 in Hadley, Massachusetts, and died Aft. 1696.Weygant reported that William died in the winter of 1699-1700 when he drowned in the Connecticut River near Deerfield on his return from a wedding he had been attending with a group of relatives and friends.

Generation No. 6
6. JONATHAN6 SACKETT
(WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born March 20, 1695/96 in Hampden, Westfield County, Massachusetts, and died September 01, 1773 in Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He married (1) ABIGAIL ASHLEY February 1721/22 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut. She died 1722. He married (2) ANN FILER January 23, 1724/25 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut, daughter of ZEBULON FILER and EXPERIENCE STRONG. She was born September 12, 1705 in Windsor, Connecticut, and died March 08, 1781 in Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut.Jonathan Sackett was reportedly born and raised in the town of Westfield. Immediately after his marriage (brief marriage) to Abigail Ashley he took possession of a small farm at Hebron, Connecticut which he had purchased the previous year. At some time (it is unclear when) he moved from Hebron to Kent. The records of Kent show that in the year 1745 "Jonathan Sacket, of Hebron," purchased from Joseph Fuller land in the town of Kent. In 1749 he purchased from Joseph Philips another tract of land in the same town.
Jonathan made a will in 1772 which read:
"In the name of God Amen. I Jonathan Sacket, of Kent in Litchfield County, Colony of Connecticut, in New England, ... give unto Anne my beloved wife the use of the half of my dwelling house and the half of my barn and the use of the half of my lot that I now live on, during her widowhood, and I also give unto my beloved wife to be at her disposal as she pleases, two cows and ten sheep and my riding mare and side saddle and bridle, and all my household goods and beds and bedding, pots, kettles, and co. Also my looms and loom tackling belonging thereto.
"Item, I give to my beloved son Justus one half of my house and barn to be at his disposal at my decease, and my home lot that I now live on at the decease or marriage of my wife. And I also give unto my son Justus my oxen and all my team tackling, and all my stock excepting the above mentioned cows, mare and sheep that I have given to my beloved wife, and my said son Justus is to find his mother a team cart and plow & co to do her team work with so long as she remains my widow. And also I give unto my son Justus that piece of land I bought of James Phelps, that is joining to my lot I now live on, and he to pay unto my son Jonathan three pounds six shilling and eight pence.
"Item, I give unto my beloved son Jonathan the above named three pounds six shilling and eight pence that my son Justus is ordered to pay to him, and also four pounds three shillings that my son Reuben is to pay to him in money or spetia. And as to my wearing clothes I give them to my beloved sons Jonathan, Justus and Reuben, to be divided equally between them. And I do appoint my well beloved wife and my son Justus to be my lawful executors of this my last Will and Testament.
"In witness hereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of June A.D. 1772. And in presence of three witnesses I do publish and pronouse and declare this to be my last Will and Testament."
Jonathan signed his will which was witnessed by John Bliss Jr., Samuel Bliss, and Ephraim Tanner.
Anne (Filer) Sackett made the following will:
"In the name of God Amen. I Anne Sacket, in Litchfield County and State of Connecticut, being well and of perfect mind and memory ... do make this my last Will and Testament ... I give devise and dispose ... in manner following viz:
"After my debts and funeral expenses are paid I give to my grand children, sons of my oldest son Jonathan Sacket deceased viz: to William Sacket, Jesse Sacket and Almon Sacket the one third part of the whole of my estate, that is to say the one half of the aforesaid one third part I give unto William, Filer and Jesse, and the other half I give unto Almon, always provided that it is to be understood that William hath received two pounds lawful money which is to be accounted towards his part - the money he received November 1773.
"Item, I give unto my son Justus Sacket one third part of the whole of my estate.
"Item, I give unto my son Reuben one third part of the whole of my estate.
"Furthermore I appoint my son Justus Sacket executor of this my last Will and Testament."
Anne signed her will in the presence of the following witnesses: Nathaniel Spooner, Augustus Curtis, and Rebecca Spooner. A date is not given for when this will was signed but two clues are that her son Jonathan was deceased (1773) and Anne refers to Connecticut as a "state" (Connecticut became a state in 1788).

Generation No. 7
7. JONATHAN7 SACKETT
(JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born December 26, 1727 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut, and died 1777 in Kent, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He married HANNAH PHELPS November 10, 1748 in Hebron, Tolland County, Connecticut, daughter of NOAH PHELPS and MARIE DYER. She was born February 28, 1726/27 in Tolland County, Connecticut, and died 1803 in Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York. Following Jonathan's early death his brother Reuben was named guardian of some of Jonathan's children.Children of JONATHAN SACKETT and HANNAH PHELPS are:
| i. | HANNAH8 SACKETT, b. September 22, 1749. | ||
| ii. | ANNA SACKETT, b. October 02, 1751. | ||
| iii. |
WILLIAM SACKETT, b. November 16, 1753, Connecticut; d. 1842, Seneca
Falls, New York; m. (1) EUNICE BOWMAN, 1774; d. March 10, 1784; m.
(2) PARTHENIA PATTERSON, May 29, 1786. William is named in his
grandmother Anne Sacket's will to receive a portion of her estate. At the outbreak of the Revolutionary War William enlisted in the 5th Connecticut Regiment, commanded by Col. Watterbury, and attached to Gen. Wooster's Brigade. William Sacket received a federal pension based on his service in the Revolution. On June 7, 1832, William was certified to receive $63.33 per year commencing on March 4, 1831, payable semi-annually on the 4th of March and the 4th of September every year. This certification reports that William was a private and a sergeant in the Revolutionary War. William was a farmer who settled first at Warren, Connecticut. In February 1788 he sold his farm at Warren and removed to Tredford, Vermont where he purchased a farm located four miles west of the Connecticut River. This farm he sold in 1801 and moved to another farm a few miles away on the banks of the Connecticut River. In 1805 he disposed of this farm and migrated with his large family to Aurelius, Cayuga County, New York where he subsequently purchased another farm where he built a house in which he lived until 1832. His son Garry and other members of his family became interested in the settlement and building up of a new village, now called Seneca Falls, ten miles to the west of the Sacket homestead at Aurelius. In 1832 William Sacket moved to the new village where he purchased a cottage in which he spent his remaining years. |

Generation No. 8
8. JESSE8 SACKETT
(JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born 1769, and died 1861 in Moravia, New York. He married ELIZABETH. She was born 1785, and died 1845. Jesse Sackett is named in his grandmother Anne Sackett's will. Jess and Elizabeth are buried in an Andrews family lot so it is possible that Elizabeth's maiden name was Andrews.Children of JESSE SACKETT and ELIZABETH are:
| i. | ABNER A.9 SACKETT, b. 1822; d. 1895. | ||
| ii. | MATILDA S. SACKETT, b. 1825; d. 1843. |
9. ALMERON8 SACKETT
(JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born about 1771 in Tolland County, Connecticut1, and died Aft. September 18, 1823. He married RACHEL WHITE 1791 in Pennsylvania or South Carolina. She was born about 1775 in South Carolina, and died sometime before September 18, 1823.The Sackett book provides incorrect information on this branch of the Sackett family. Almeron Sackett did not die unmarried as reported by the author of the Sackett book. As the youngest son, Almeron left Connecticut and moved away leaving no record in Connecticut of his travels, marriage, or family. Our Almeron Sackett lived until after 1823 and had a large family as demonstrated by numerous records.
Almeron Sackett is first mentioned in his grandmother Anne Sackett's will, which reads in part:
"... I give to my grand children, sons of my oldest son Jonathan Sacket deceased viz: to William Sacket, Jesse Sacket and Almon Sacket the one third part of the whole of my estate, that is to say the one half of the aforesaid one third part I give unto William, Filer and Jese, and the other half I give unto Almon, always provided that it is to be understood that William hath received two pounds lawful money which is to be accounted towards his part - the money he received November 1773."
It sounds like Anne left one third of her estate to one son, one third of estate to her other son, and one third to her grandsons. This is confusing but it appears that Anne favored Almon/Almeron by giving him a larger share than his brothers received. No date is given on Anne's will but it must have been prepared following 1777 when her son Jonathan died. Her will speaks of Connecticut as a "state", which happened in 1788.
Almeron Sackett is next mentioned in his father's probate records. When Jonathan Sackett died in 1777, Jonathan's brother Rueben Sackett became guardian of Jonathan's children, including Almiron (sic), who was identified as about 6 years old. Rueben Sackett was a surgeon during the Revolutionary War. In 1778, Almeron's mother, Hannah Sackett, made a will in which she identifies her children. Jonathan and Hannah's son, William identifies his brothers and sisters in another statement dated May 15, 1778.
Almeron Sackett appears in the 1800 federal census as a resident of Tioga Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania with 3 sons and one daughter, himself and his wife. Almeron Sackett next appears 4 times in the Allegheny County, New York court records, the first in October of 1808 in which he was a defendant against Oliver Moore (Almeron confessed and paid $70). Three other incidents are records in the court records in January 1809, the first in which Almeron and Rachel were given custody of Ancil White until he is 21. The Western Spectator newspaper of Marietta, Ohio (Vol III, no 2, October 1812) includes mention of a horse that was found by Almeron Sackett being appraised by Eleaser Olney and Andrew Lake.
Almeron and at least two of his sons (Elisha and David) served in the War of 1812 for which they earned bounty land (see more about this below). Almeron joined the army in 1814 and was discharged March 27, 1815 in Zanesville, Ohio. His discharge papers report: "Said Almeron Sackett was born in the state of Connecticut, is about 40 years of age, five feet seven inches high, brown complexion, black eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted, a Cooper. Given at Zainsville in the state of Ohio this 27th day of March 1815." Almeron was a private in the 19th Regiment of the Infantry in the War of 1812.
In 1814 Almeron and Rachel Sackett are identified in case # 102 in which they administer the estate of Anson White August 29, 1814, in Muskingum County, Ohio. In 1818, Almeron Sackett appears on the Gallia County, Ohio tax role. By 1820 the Sackett's were in Illinois. Almeron Sackett received 320 acres of bounty land for his service in the War of 1812 on January 20th, 1818 (section 27, Township 11N, Range 02E, Meridian 4) which appears to be in Knox County. His son Elisha also received 320 acres of bounty land on January 20th, 1818 in Fulton County. Almeron's son David Sackett received 320 acres of bounty land on the same date in Schuyler County.
The Almeron Sackett family appears in the 1820 federal census in Alexander County, Illinois with 2 males under 10 years of age, 2 males 10-16, 1 male 16-26, and 1 male 45 and up (presumably Almeron), and 2 females under 10 years of age and 1 female 26-45. On January 22nd, 1820 it was reported that Almeron Sackett had a letter in the Madison County post office in Edwardsville.
The final record of Almeron Sackett appears on September 18th, 1823 when an Almeron Sackett (presumably the same one) married Isabella Worely in Bond County, Illinois. If this is our Almeron, then Rachel had died before then.
It has been suggested that Rachel White was the daughter of Elisha White. An Elisha White appears a few doors away from Almeron and Rachel Sackett on the 1800 census for the Tioga Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania. Elisha White reported no males under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 16-25, no males 26-44, and 1 male 45 +, no females under 10, no females 10 -15, 1 female 16-26, and 1 female 26-44.
Rachel (White) Sackett may have had a brother Ancil; Rachel and Almeron Sackett were given customy of an Ancil White until he was 21 years of age (granted in Allegheny County, New York in October 1808. This may indicate that Elisha White and/or his wife died in October 1808. Later in Muskingum County, Ohio, in 1818, Almeron and Rachel Sackett were executors of an Anson White's estate.
Children of ALMERON SACKETT and RACHEL WHITE are:
| 10. | i. | ELISHA W.9 SACKETT, b. August 23, 1794, Pennsylvania; d. January 17, 1848, Walshville, Montgomery County, Illinois. | |

He married ELIZABETH VOYLES about 1824 in probably Illinois, daughter of SAMUEL VOYLES and ELIZABETH W.. She was born March 01, 1804 in Pennsylvania4, and died September 24, 1851 in Walshville, Montgomery County, Illinois5.Elisha Sackett, his brother David and their father Almeron, all served in the War of 1812, for which they all received bounty land in Illinois on January 20th, 1818. War records report that Elisha Sackett was born in the state of Pennsylvania, was about 21 years of age, five feet seven inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes, fair hair, and by occupation, when inlisted, a farmer. Given at Zanesville in the state of Ohio, March 1815. Elisha's bounty land consisted of 320 acres in Fulton County, Illinois (Section 34, Township 06N, Range 02E, Meridian 4).
It is possible (likely) that Elisha's middle name was "White", which was his mother's maiden name. It has been suggested that Rachel White's father was Elisha White, which would be the origin of Elisha W. Sackett's name.
Children of ELISHA SACKETT and ELIZABETH VOYLES are:

11. DAVID9 SACKETT
(ALMERON8, JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born about 1795 in Sacketts Harbor, Livingston County, New York, and died about 1849 in Texas. He married MARGARET VOYLES about 1820 in Illinois, daughter of SAMUEL VOYLES and ELIZABETH W.. She was born about 1800.David Sackett served in the War of 1812 along with his father Almeron and brother Elisha. For his service, David was granted 320 acres of bounty land on January 20th, 1818 in Schuyler County, Illinois (Section 22, Township 02N, Range 02W, Meridian 4). 17. SAMUEL A.10 SACKETT
(ELISHA W.9, ALMERON8, JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born April 19, 1837 in Staunton, Macoupin County, Illinois, and died August 27, 1864 in Memphis, Tennessee6. He married MARTHA A. BOYD December 18, 1856 in Stanton, Macoupin County, Illinois6, daughter of JESSE BOYD and MATILDA VOYLES.Samuel Sackett appeared on the 1860 U.S. Census as a 23 year old farmer, born in Illinois. He had $700 in real estate and $300 in personal property. His wife was listed as Martha, age 20, born in Illinois. Enumerated with them was a 1 year old male child, but the name was difficult to read (it began with an M and ended with atic).
Samuel A. Sackett enlisted as a Corporal in Company L of the 3rd Illinois Cavalry on August 12, 1861 in Walshville, Illinois (his brothers Jasper and Elisha enlisted with him in the same company). He was seriously wounded on August 21, 1864 when he received a gun shot wound to the thorax and left lung; he died 6 days later on August 27, 1864. He is not listed in The Roll of Honor. Martha A. Sackett applied for a widow's pension on April 6, 1865 (application # 88,542, certificate # 47,228); she applied for a minor's pension for their daughter on September 19, 1867 (application # 152,547, certificate # 106,343).

18. JASPER NEWTON10 SACKETT
(ELISHA W.9, ALMERON8, JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born April 18, 1840 in Staunton, Macoupin County, Illinois7, and died March 07, 1933 in Stillwater, Oklahoma7. He married EMILY JANE CORLEW April 06, 1865 in Hillsboro, Illinois8. She was born December 1847 in Illinois9, and died June 06, 190310.Jasper Sackett appeared on the 1860 U.S. Census as a Farm Laborer in the John Price household. He reported that his age was 20 and he was born in Illinois.
Elisha, Jasper, and Samuel Sackett all enlisted on August 12, 1861 in Company L of the 3rd Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry. Jasper had served once prior to this. His pension file contains the following statement: "I served during the civil war in Co. L, 3 Illinois Cav., I first went out in the 3 months call in Co. D, 7 Illinois Inf." Jasper's pension file reported that he lived in Montgomery County, Illinois until 1877, Cherokee County, Kansas from 1877 to 1890, and Oklahoma from 1890 to 1915 (in 1912 he was a resident of Payne County, Oklahoma).
Jasper reported that he became sick when he was exposed to the elements by lying in the swamps on the Yazoo River in December of 1862. He described laying down cane to keep from lying in the water, but still could not keep out of the water. "He was taken sick with Diarrhea on the road from Arkansas Post to Millihens bend on the boat in Jan. 1863. In Feb. 1863 was taken with Piles but remained on duty till March when he was relieved from duty but did not go to the hospital because was cared for by his brothers and messmates. He having two brothers in the same mes with him preferred to have them care for him instead of going to the hospital and was not in a hospital." Jasper was discharged April 10, 1863 at Millikens Bend, Louisiana.
Jasper's invalid pension application was filed January 2, 1884 from Kansas (application # 503,299, certificate # 547,915).

19. ELISHA10 SACKETT
(ELISHA W.9, ALMERON8, JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born July 07, 1844 in Walshville, Montgomery County, Illinois, and died August 17, 1926 in Boise, Idaho11. He married (1) NANCY ELIZABETH TURNTINE September 08, 1870 in Montgomery County, Illinois12, daughter of RICHARD TURNTINE and SARAH BEARD. She was born Aft. 1850 in Illinois, and died 1931 in Miami, Ottawa County, Oklahoma13. He married (2) FRANCES ANGELINE RENFRO August 01, 1880 in Pleasant Grove, Illinois. She died 1913 in Idaho.Elisha Sackett appeared on the 1860 U.S. Census as a Farm Laborer, age 16, born in Illinois, and a member of the Joseph Davis household. Elisha, Jasper, and Samuel Sackett all enlisted on August 12, 1861 in Company L of the 3rd Regiment of the Illinois Cavalry. When their brother, Jasper, became ill, Samuel and Elisha cared for him rather than send him to the hospital. Elisha's military records report that when he enlisted he furnished his own horse, valued at $125, for which he was "entitled to pay for the use and risk of the same."
The records report him present with his company from enlistment through August 1863. The September/October 1863 records report Elisha "On detached service doing orderly duty ..." The next record reports "Detached from Co. L and serving as escort for Maj. Gen'l [?] condg. Dir 13 A. C. mounted on his own horse and own equipment." The next record, November/December 1863 reports "Detached service doing escort and orderly duty for Maj. Genl. Washburn." Another record also dated November/December 1863 reports Elisha on his detached escort duty at Ft. Esperanza, Texas. The next record (January/February 1864) reports "Detached doing escort & orderly duty for Genl. Washburn since Aug17, 1863, by order of Genl. E.O.C. Ord." Elisha was relieved from detached service and reported back to his company on March 5, 1864.
The Civil War took its toll on the Sackett brothers. Like his brother, Jasper, Elisha was also bothered by the cold, wet conditions he had to endure. In April of 1863 he was hospitalized with pneumonia, which apparently led to lung problems throughout the remainder of his life. Elisha's first pension request, based on this lung condition, was filed on June 14, 1880 (application # 380,915, certificate # 238,705).
In his Civil War pension file are documents Elisha filed in 1912, in which he reports that he lived in Montgomery County and Bond County, Illinois from 1864 to 1885. From 1885 to 1896 he was a resident of Caldwell, Idaho, and then from 1896 to 1912 he was a resident of Boise, Idaho. Elisha Sackett is listed on the 1900 U.S. Census as a resident of South Boise, Ada County, Idaho (page 406). Pension payment records at the National Archives in Washington report that Elisha Sackett was paid $8.00 a month starting April 23, 1884, $12.00 a month starting March 8, 1907, $24.00 a month starting February 19, 1909, $19.00 a month starting June 8, 1912, $25.00 a month starting July 9, 1913, $40.00 a month starting June 10, 1918, and finally $50.00 a month starting May 1, 1920.
Nancy Turrentine Sackett Kuder always referred to her first husband as a "red-haired Irishman".
Footnote # 604 in the Montgomery County, Illinois report "D/o W.R. or R.W. Turntine - given both ways." Lennie Sackett reported that Nancy's parents were Richard Turrentine and Sally Beard. Records indicate that Richard Turrentine was married to a Sarah Beard, so Sally could have been a nickname. Sarah Sackett reported that Nancy Turentine was born April 10, about 1850, but the exact year was not known. We know that she was definitely born after 1850 since she did not appear on the 1850 census; she was probably born 1851 - 1855 (she was married in 1870, so she was likely at least 15 then).
Lennie Sackett provided a death date of about 1922 for his grandmother. The book Obituaries Printed in the Miami Daily District News and Miami Daily News Record, 1923-1933, reported the death of Mrs. Nancy E. Kuder in the April 9, 1931 issue (page 1, column 4). These two dates differ substantially.
In his Civil War pension file, Elisha reported that his first wife was Nancy Turrentine (he spelled it Turndine) and "she left me and I got a divorce..."
According to Elisha Sackett's Civil War pension file, "Yes, i am married, my wife's name is Frances Angeline Sackett. her maiden name was Frances Angeline Renfro but when we were married it was Frances Angeline Shields the widow of Thomas J. Shields of Co F 135 regiment of Illinois Infantry who died after they were married from lung trouble." In another document he states that she was first married to Silas Hagler, who died. Then she was married to "Jeff" Shields.

21. JASPER P.11 SACKETT
(JASPER NEWTON10, ELISHA W.9, ALMERON8, JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born October 07, 1876 in Illinois. He married EDNA. She was born February 1879 in Missouri.Children of JASPER SACKETT and EDNA are:

22. ELISHA WINROW11 SACKETT
(ELISHA10, ELISHA W.9, ALMERON8, JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born March 02, 1872 in Montgomery County, Illinois, and died 1960 in Dayton, Liberty County, Texas. He married BERTHA ESTER GRIFFITH. She was born July 28, 1871, and died 1937.There is some family history concerning the birth date of this Elisha Sackett. He always said that he was born in March 1, 1864, but records indicate otherwise. There was apparently a long running history of his disagreeing with the official records about his birth date. There are a number of points in favor of his birth occurring in 1872. First, his mother would only have been about 12 years old in 1864 (not unheard of, but unusual). Second, his father was in the Civil War in 1863 and 1864; there is no record of leave to return to Illinois in that time period. Third, his parents were not married until 1870. Fourth, this Elisha Sackett does not appear on the 1870 U.S. Census. Therefore, I have used the birth date provided in his father's Civil War pension file: March 2, 1872.
Elisha Winrow Sackett was married and had a family prior to his marriage to Nora Cathern (Stilson) Sackett, his sister-in-law. Sarah Sackett reported that Winrow was married twice before marrying Nora Sackett; the first wife, the mother of his children, died; the second marriage ended in divorce. A 1955 newspaper report of his "90th" birthday reported that Elisha was born in Springfield, Missouri, and that he came to Texas in 1906. This birth location differs from other records which show him born in Illinois.
An entry appears in the 1900 Missouri Soundex for E.W. Sackett, a resident of Adams County, Missouri, born May 1864 in Illinois. Enumerated with him was his wife, Maude (born October 1867 in Illinois), and 2 children (possibly theirs, but unclear). This entry appears in Volume 1, ED 4, Sheet 9, Line 100.
Buried next to Winrow E. and Bertha E. Sackett in the Ryan Cemetery in Dayton, Liberty County, Texas, is Ida R. Sackett (1900-1931). Also in the same cemetery is O. W. Sackett (7-11-1939 - 4-10-1965). A Frances Sackett (12-8-1897 - 10-20-1971) is buried in the Linney Cemetery in Dayton, Liberty County, Texas. A Jake E. Sackett (1-31-1898 - 8-24-1957) is buried in the Greenhill Cemetery in Dayton, Liberty County, Texas. These are possibly all children of Winrow Sackett.
Lennie Sackett referred to Winrow's wife as "Bertie", which fits with Bertha.
Children of ELISHA SACKETT and BERTHA GRIFFITH are:
| i. | NETTIE12 SACKETT, d. about 1930. | ||
| ii. | CHARLIE SACKETT, b. January 04, 1893. | ||
| iii. | JAKE ERNEST SACKETT, b. 1898; d. 1957; m. THELMA CATHERINE CHERRY. Burial records indicate Jake E. Sackett was a member of "Tx Pvt 27 Co 165 Dept Brig WWI". A Thelma Catherine Sackett died in Harris County, Texas on April 26, 1991. | ||
| iv. | WOODIE RAY SACKETT, d. February 05, 1977, Liberty County, Texas; m. LETHA JANE BILLINGSLY. Letha Jane Billingsly was once identified as Liza Jane. I found a record for Liza Jane Sackett, who died in Liberty County, Texas on September 28, 1982. It is possible that Liza Jane and Letha Jane are the same people. |
23. JOHN WILLIAM11 SACKETT
(ELISHA10, ELISHA W.9, ALMERON8, JONATHAN7, JONATHAN6, WILLIAM5, JOHN4, SIMON3, THOMAS2, THOMAS1) was born February 11, 1874 in Litchfield, Montgomery Co, Illinois, and died September 20, 1940 in Dayton, Liberty Co, Texas. He married (2) NORA CATHERN STILSON February 20, 1909, daughter of JAMES STILSON and MALINDA BREWER. She was born April 11, 1894 in Exeter, Barry County, Missouri, and died November 18, 1965 in Dayton, Liberty County, Texas.Lennie Sackett reported that his father was married once before he was married to Nora Cathern Stilson. The name of that wife is unknown; the marriage ended in divorce. One child was born to that union, a son named Ernie (Earnest William), who was born September 15, 1895. The book Early School Census Records for Ottawa County, Oklahoma (1912-1915) presents a slightly different birth date when it reports that Earnest, son of J.W. Sackett, was born September 15, 1898. There is a family story of John William Sackett getting the baby, Ernie, and taking him across a river. Shots were fired at the fleeing man and baby as he rowed his boat across the river. Ernie was raised by his grandmother and her second husband, Nancy and Jacob Kuder.
John Sackett moved his family from Miami, Oklahoma to Dayton, Texas in about 1930, near where his brother, Winrow, lived. It is possible that the move was in 1931, following the death of John's mother, Nancy, since Lennie Sackett remembers reading to his grandmother when was sick near the end of her life.
Nora's father remarried after her mother died. Sarah Sackett reported that Nora Stilson intensely disliked her step-mother, so she was anxious to leave home. She married at 13 to get away. One story still told is that when Nora's natural mother combed her daughter's hair in the morning she saved the hair from the brush and pushed it into a crack in the wall; Nora's step-mother would not continue that tradition, instead she threw Nora's hair into the fireplace, which just didn't seem right to the little girl.
After the death of her husband, Nora married her brother-in-law, Winrow Sackett. According to Sarah Sackett, Nora and Winrow were married in March of the same year as Lennie and Sarah (i.e., March 1944).
Child of JOHN WILLIAM SACKETT and his first wife:
